Adonis was a mortal with whom Aphrodite fell in love (possibly after being scratched by one of her son's arrows). She took care of him and sheltered him, but to keep him from the prying eyes of Hephaestos, her husband, she asked Persephone to watch over him. The younger goddess also fell in love with his beauty and refused to return him to Aphrodite. Eventually, Zeus settled the dispute by decreeing that Adonis would spend 1/3 of the year with Persephone, 1/3 with Aphrodite and the last third was his to do with as he pleased. He chose to spend 2/3 of the year with Aphrodite. This is an alternative to the Persephone myths explanation of the seasons for regions of the world where there were only two seasons, and growing season and a dry season.
Adonis was killed by a wild boar, and as Aphrodite rushed to his side, she tried to use the immortal nectar to save his life. Where his nectar-mingled blood touched the ground, the flowering anemones grew.
