Astaroth and Baal were also the chief goddess and god of the Phoenicians, Moabites, Philistines, and Zidonians. Astaroth is mentioned in The Bible only as an example of the undesirable paganism that had been mixed with the worship of God and as something needing to be avoided. Worship of the goddess and worship of Yahweh are presented as incompatible and the former is always condemned.

Depending in part on the translator, Astaroth, Ashtorethand Asherah are variants of the name of the Semitic goddess of the planet Venus and of fertility. Her worship by the Israelites is widely mentioned in the Bible, as are her "high places" and "groves".
Until the advent of modern Archaeology, readers could not understand the biblical references to Astarothor Asherah. In medieval times, some believed that she was a demon, and depicted her as a man with animal features. Biblical scholars interpreted the references as cult objects from Baal worship, and in other cases as wooden poles or groves of trees. The discovery and translation of the Ugaritic tablets in the 1930s finally provided clues about the goddess.

A considerable number of small, clay, female statuettes, dating from the eighth and early seventh centuries, and which archaeologists usually call "pillar figurines", have been unearthed all over Israel, and were abundant in private dwellings. These appear to have been depictions of the fertility goddess. Two important finds link the names of YHWH and "his Asherah", apparently his divine consort in early belief.

What did Astaroth the goddess look like?

In history, Astaroth worshiped by greeks and romans in many forms. Aphrodite, Artemis, Demetra, Athena, Hera and many other not well known entities refered to the same person, Astaroth. This happened not like worship a different person but in the same way christians believe the triune of their god. As the forms of Astaroth were different, the same happens with the appearance. Aphrodite is a 'hot' blond, Artemis a brunette virgin, Athena a beautiful bronze blond but cold goddess. The only common that have these entities in appearance is the deep blue eyes similar with the blue spots of the peacock.

Where is Astaroth mentioned in the Bible?

Depending in part on the translator, Astaroth, Ashtoreth and Asherah are variants of the name of the Semitic goddess of the planet Venus and of fertility. Because the books that reference her were written or edited after the adoption of monotheism, those references that exist are usually derogatory and it is usually implied that worship of the goddess was only of short duration by those of a rebellious nature, yet in one form or other we find frequent references to her right up until the time of the Deuteronomistic reforms of the seventh century BCE. Most biblical references link her with the god Baal, rather than with Yahweh, but archaeological finds show her linked with the God Yahweh. The King James Bible does not use the style, Ashtareth , only one reference to Astaroth, which is interpreted as a place named after the goddess, and several references to Ashtaroth.Deuteronomy 1:4 "After he had slain Sihon the king of the Amorites, which dwelt in Heshbon, and Og the king of Bashan, which dwelt at Astaroth in Edrei"The variant Ashtaroth is used for the goddess, including the following examples:Judges 2:13 "And they forsook the LORD, and served Baal and Ashtaroth"Judges 10:6 "And the children of Israel did evil again in the sight of the LORD, and served Baalim, and Ashtaroth..."1 Samuel 7:3 "And Samuel spake unto all the house of Israel, saying, If ye do return unto the LORD with all your hearts, then put away the strange gods and Ashtaroth from among you..."The KJV and someother English translations have often translated Asherah as 'groves', simply because the translators of the time did not understand what an asherah was.
