Gerald P. Wergin (3/3/1922 - 7/09/1998). He served as a fighter pilot in the 80th Fighter Group of the 10th Army Air Force in the China, Burma, India (CBI) theater of WWII. He was the Blue Squadron Leader of the Burma Banshees so named for the wailing sound of their planes when diving. Their motto "Angles on Our Wings" is a reference to their primary mission; to provide air cover they to crews flying supplies. The treacherous route through the massive Himalayan Moutains between India and China is famously known as "The Hump."
Wergin attained the rank of Captain, racked up 156 combat missions, was awarded The Distinguished Flying Cross & one Oak Leaf Clusters, The Air Medal & three Oak Leaf Clusters and a Presidential Unit Citation.
