Chicago Joe was born in Ireland January first 1844. She moved to Chicago and changed her name to Josephine Airey. After working in Chicago's red light district she moved to Helena, MT and opened a dance hall (brothel). Men danced with girls and the money came from drinks for self and lady after every dance. She was arrested in 1885 for running a business that " wherein mens' souls are lured to the shores of sin by the combined seductive influences of wine, women and dance..." Joe was eventually found not guilty. Joe then proceeded to open the Coliseum a variety theater. Upstairs Joe installed private boxes so that people could "socialize". A bell in the boxes was rung to bring "box girls" that sold and delivered drinks to the boxes. The law then prohibited the sale of alcohol around women. To evade this new law Joe cut holes into the walls called "wine boxes" no women were allowed in. Joe watched the goings on in her theater every night. She wore a golden jewel studded girdle around a massive waist. She often prided herself about her "queenly manner". When the recession hit Helena Joe borrowed lots of money and in the 1890s was forced to sell her buildings for $21,119.23. Joe died in 1899.
