Dolphus Raymond is a very unique character throughout the novel. This is because of his social status and in particular, his thoughts and beliefs. Dolphusis a wealthy and fairly well-educated white man. He was engaged to a white woman, one of the Spencers, but she committed suicide on the wedding day for which only Dolphus knew why. This greatly affected his views on society and social events. This may also be why Dolphus prefers black people over white people. He dislikes the way that white people are hypocritical and generally prejudiced and so he feels more comfortable being with blacks. He has a black wife named Helen. He has three children with her but only lives with one of them because he has sent the older two children to the North because racism was not as significant in North America. Dolphus Raymond likes simplicity and therefore pretends that he is an alcoholic so that people can blame the alcohol for his way of living. To a white person living in the area at the time, marrying a black person would be something that is unacceptable. By pretending that he is an alcoholic, people would think that he made the decision to marry a black person because he was an alcoholic who was always drunk and could not make a rational decision.
Mr Raymond isn't a black man in fact he is a white man who married a black woman and lived in the black community. Jem has heard a story that Mr Raymond is always drunk. (However, we learn later that this is just an act.)
