Prince Edgar was the only true heir to the English throne when Edward the Confessor died in 1066. He was most likely born in Hungary, and was the great-nephew of Edward. Though the only one related to Edward by blood, the throne was passed over to Harold Godwinson, who was Edward's brother-in-law. Edward had married Harold's sister Edith, and because they had no children, England was in a bit of a dilemma, trying to choose who the next heir should be. Because Edgar was born in Hungary, he had few supporters in England, the complete opposite of Harold, who was well-known as Harold, Earl of Essex.

Harold II may have been descended in the male line from Æthelræd I, King of Wessex (865-871AD) but this has never been proved.
