This question is answered by Mrs. T's Year 7 History class at The Thomas Alleyene School in Stevenage. Little is known about Edgar. He was Edward the Confessor's nearest blood relative. He was a decendant of King Ethelred and his Grandfather was Edmund Ironside. His father Edward the Atherling was publically named as Edward's successor in 1057 and this was supported by the Witan and Harold Godwin. He died suddenly and it is thought that he was murdered (William of Normandy and Harold Godwin are both suspects). Edgar was 5 when his father died and 14 when Edward was dying and Edward did not think it would be a sensible choice for him to become king upon his death.
