Hyperion was the Titan god of light; a son of Ouranos (Haven) and Gaea (Earth). By his sister Theia the Titanid goddess of sight (thea) and shining light of the clear blue sky (aithre). She was also, by extension, the goddess who endowed gold, silver and gems with their brilliance and intrinsic value; they are the parents of Helios the Titan god of the Sun, Selene the Titan goddess of the Moon, and Eos the Titan goddess of the Dawn.

As the father of the sun and dawn, Hyperion was no doubt regarded as the Titan of the pillar of the east. That is, when Hyperion and his brothers Koios, Krios and Iapetos seized their father Ouranos (the heavens) and Kronos armed with an adamantine sickle, castrated Ouranos while his brothers held him firm. It is not likely that they ever let go of Ouranos; as Atlas, the son of Iapetus guarded the pillars of the heavens (or held the heavens and earth).

It is worth noting that Titan means "straining gods" while Atlas means "endures".
