Jose Gaspar, known by his nickname Gasparilla was a purported Spanish pirate, the "last of the Buccaneers", who is claimed to have raided the west coast of Florida during the late 18th and early 19th centuries.
The Jose Gaspar pirate ship is kept in the bay, right off of the north end of Bayshore Boulevard, near Tampa General Hospital.
The legend is that Jose Gaspar is the pirate that established Tampa.
Gasparilla is his nickname, but his actual real world existence is still not confirmed.
Jose Gaspar was supposivley created by a pirate named John Gomez. He claimed to have been one of Gaspar's crew men. Gaspar was titled 'fake' until later in the early 20th century. Written information has been located and Gaspar's sunken ship location was said to have been located but not found or investigated. The only way to reach his ship is by scuba, says some local boaters. Some still believe Gaspar or Gasparilla, the most famous Florida pirate is not real. Other believe different.
