Matthew Thornton was one of the final signers of the Declaration of Independence as one of three representatives of the state of New Hampshire. He actually signed later than July 4th on November 4th 1776 when he was elegible to take his congressional seat and signed the declaration. He was an early supporter of sucession from England in papers he wrote in 1774 as a representative in New Hampshire. Earlier, he was a sucessful doctor and colonel in the military and saved many men from injuries, losing only 6 men under his care. The town of Thornton, New Hampshire was named in his honor.
