Nyctimene was a daughter of Epopeus, king of Lesbos. She was raped by her father, ran to the woods in shame, where she was metamorphosed to an owl by Athena, who felt sorry for her. Nyctimene as an owl became symbol of Athena. It is said she still feels so ashamed and therefore she hides from daylight.
