NO! There will be a big hole in soras story if you dont play kingdom hearts: chain of memories. There is a ps2 version. I did play re: chain of memories after and I do recommend that you get it but most people can get Sora's story playing only those 2 games

Remember, Birth by Sleep is a pre-sequel to Kingdom Hearts I. The secret movie at the end of Kingdom Hearts II is part of the opening and ending cut scenes of Birth by Sleep. Terra gave Riku the ability to wield a Keyblade, but as Riku grew older, he chose darkness over light and the Keyblade chose Sora instead as Riku's body was possessed by Ansem.

Why did they change soras voice in Kingdom Hearts dream drop distance?
Dream drop distance was release in July of 2012. kingdom Hearts 2 was released in 2005. There is a 7 year difference in time. The voice is the same in 2007's Re:Chain of Memories. I can oly assume in the last 5 years that the voice actor must have changed, or did not resign. It makes sense.
