Shares are "things" and like any other thing can be held jointly by two or more individuals. Just like a property. They can be held as either: "joint tenants" - meaning that they are held jointly and that the ownership of the share passes directly to the Survivor on death of the other. "tenants in common" - the share is held 50-50 and on death the beneficial interest passes to the estate of the deceased.
