Just as the Teddy Bear was named for President Theodore Roosevelt. Billy Possum was Named after President William Taft. No one is quite sure why Taft became associated with a Possum but it is assumed it has to do with Taft's habit of falling asleep and the possums trait of playing dead when cornered. (Taft had a form of Narcolepsy which may have been caused by sleep apnea.) Billy Possum was also a southern character similar in nature to Briar rabbit.
