The President of France is Nicholas Sarkozy. The Prime Minister of France is François Fillon.

The President and the Prime Minister share power. The President has less power in France than in America, but the Prime Minister has less power than the Prime Minister in Britain.

The President is responsible for foreign affairs and the military. The Prime Minister usually focuses on domestic affairs.

Although the President has more power than the Prime Minister, he is not the "head of government" in the same way the US President is.

The French Revolution started in 1789. At that time, Louis XVI was king of France until 1793 (when he was killed). After that, the National Assembly grabbed the power, and after that the Directory. By the time Napoleon came to power in 1799 (stating a coupe and turning France into an Empire), France was one huge chaos.
