Then, Mitt Romney won the Republican nomination, and he became the prime challenger. (There were third party challengers too, such as Gary Johnson, the libertarian candidate, or Jill Stein of the Green Party. But the main challenge came from Mitt Romney.) On November 6, 2012, Mr. Romney lost to Barack Obama, and the president was re-elected.
