J.H. Whitney & Company is the oldest venture capital firm in the U.S., founded in 1946 by John Hay Whitney and his partner Benno Schmidt. Since 2001, the firm had shifted their focus from Venture to leveraged buyouts, turnarounds, acquisitions, and recapitalizations of more mature companies in the small to middle market. The firm is based in New Canaan, Connecticut. Today, the team is headed by Peter Castleman (Managing Director), supported by 10 other investment professionals.
Historically, over 50% of its investments have been in family businesses. JH Whitney classified themselves to be opportunity directed, not industry focused, but the majority of its investments tend to be in the consumer/retail, business services, healthcare, and specialty manufacturing industries.
In its previous fund (Fund VI), the Fund targets an average investment of between $30m to $60m per company resulting in a portfolio of 12 to 14 companies. The Fund predominately invests in the U.S.; and the Fund set a limitation of no more than 10% of committed capital can be invests outside U.S.
