What Year did Henry Smith Grammar School Close in Hartlepool Cleveland?
The school amalgamated with King Oswy Secondary and Galleys Field technical? Schools when the comprehensive system came in. Not sure of the exact date , possibly around1973. I was in the last intake year of Henry Smith Grammar and being in close proximity I was taught in both the Galleys Field and Henrys site. The old building closed in 1977 and my year group then moved to the King Oswy Site to commence our 6th form education. It was during the year 72-73 that the final decision to merge the schools took place. The head of Henry's (Mr Wilson) retired opening the way for the King Oswy head to become head of the merged schools from September 1973. My major sorrow was the reintroduction of soccer into a school famed for its rugby history (the Barbarians played their first ever game on the Friarage - the Henry Smith headland school field). This may have also impacted upon Hartlepool Rovers who frequently recruited ex-Henry Smith rugby players.
