Olav Tryggvason was the first Norwegian king with that name. he was king from 995 to 1000. he was central during the turning of Norway from Norse mythology to Christianity. he is believed to be the grandson of the Harald Hårfagre/ Fairhair, but that may be spread to increase his right to the throne. he founded the city of Trondheim and build the first church of Norway. he died in the battle of Swold.

Olav the holy was the second. he was a saint and the person who made Christianity the state religion. he lead Norway from 1015 to 1028 and died in the battle of Stiklestad.

the third Olav was Olav Kyrre (Kyrre = peaceful) who ruled from 1067 to 1093. until -69 he ruled with his brother Magnus. during Kyrre's rule time was more peaceful. he made peace with the Danes and the British. he also improved Norway's relationship with the pope. since his time was peaceful and nothing important happened, not much is known about him.

number IV is Olav haakonssson. he was originally king of Denmark after the danish court refused to have the Swedish king's son as king. his mother became his guardian and made the decisions since he was 5/6 years old. four years later, in 1380, he became the Norwegian king when his father, the Norwegian king Håkon Magnusson, died. his mother tried to make him king of Sweden too. 17 years old he died of pneumonia.

Olav the fifth/V was the last king with this name, but had the name Alexander Edward Christian Fredrik when he was prince of Denmark not Norway. he become Prince of Norway when his father king Carl of Denmark, was chosen king of Norway after the union with Sweden. he was the first heir of the throne to be raised in Norway since Olav IV. he was chosen as chief of defence in 1944 and became king in 1957 and died in 1991. King Olav had a popular, down to earth manner that made the people like him and gave him the nickname the the people's king. in 2005 he was chosen as the Norwegian of the century.
