Anorexia is actually rather rare. It can strike girls, boys, men and women of all ages. It is critical when it strikes during childhood or adolescence, as it impedes the process of growth and development of both the body and the brain. It is genetic, and it has its roots in obsessive-compulsive anxiety disorder. It is not caused by wanting to lose weight, want to be fit or wanting to avoid pain. It is caused by the actual lack of nutrition and weight loss, ie, starvation. It is very different from someone 'dieting' or purging as a fad. It is a psychiatric AND physical disorder. Read up on the Minnesota Starvation Experiment done in the 1940's. Most anorexics symptoms are the results of starvation.
I'm 14 years old and I'm in the second year of senior school surrounded by tiny beautiful long legged girls. I think being surrounded by this is making me become anorexic, at least i want to now. I can remember thinking how bad this would be and how silly the really thin girls on the runways looked, but now i feel that i should to look good. I hate my body. every time i look in the mirror. My parents make me eat at home but when i am at school i try not to eat anything. My friends get cross with me but then they all look stunning so they're just not handling it from my perspective. And guys always like the big boobed skinny girls. People say that they don't, that its a lie and guys like curvy girls but not at my age. Guys like skinny girls.
