Polyphemus (Gr. Πολυφημος, best transliterated Polyphemos), the cyclops of Sicily whom Odysseus fools and then blinds in Homer's Odyssey, was the son of Poseidon and the nymph Thoosa. He was frustrated in his attempts to woo Galateia (also, Galatea), a sea nymph, though he did father a child with her, named Galatos (also, Galatus).
The cyclopes were a tribe of one-eyed giants who were, as a group, born when the blood of Uranus (best transliterated Ouranos) spilled onto Gaia, Mother Earth. They inhabited the island called Hypereia in The Odyssey, which was later identified with Sicily. Polyphemus, their leader, was unique in that he was a son of Poseidon. These cyclopes, the "younger" cyclopes, are not to be confused with the "elder" cyclopes, who were a different breed, but older; the elder cyclopes fought against Zeus in the Titan War. Interestingly, Homer never explicitly states that all cyclopes have just one eye apiece; the name cyclops means "wheel eye" or "orb eye," and refers only to the size of the eye. Polyphemus is the only one who Homer references as being one-eyed.
