You are responsible to ensure you have the correct protective mask size. You might be assisted by someone else, but you are ultimately responsible. It is your life, choose wisely.
In the Army, protective masks are issued by the unit's NBC NCO. He is responsible for making sure the mask you're issued fits...but since these masks are torn down regularly for cleaning, the individual soldier is ultimately responsible for sizing and fitting it.

It will not seal correctly and you will be exposed to CBRN agents.
You won't be able to get a good seal, and outside air and other elements (such as chemical gasses) will be able to get into the mask.

Upon issue of your protective mask, you should clean and inspect your mask IAW with the M50 mask and T.O. and as directed
