Christopher Columbus or some Columbus-era explorer? There are two cities named Santiago I am just guessing from the Spanish angle of presentation.

They believed that the soul couldn't get over to the other world if not. The things they were buried with were supposed to follow them.

Brian Boru is supposed to be buried in St Patricks Cathedral in Armagh

Santiago hates the jellyfish because they attach their stinging tentacles to his lines, so when he pulls them up he ends up with sore and blistering hands from the jellyfish's poison. There's supposed to be a second less discreet answer, but I'm not too sure what it is.
