The last Governor-General of India was Chakravarti Rajagopalachari. He was appointed on 21 June 1948 by His Majesty George VI, on the advice of Jawaharlal Nehru, then the Prime Minister of India. He served until the post of the Governor-General ceased to exist on 26 January 1950, upon Indian independence.

The role was abolished in 1950 when the Republic of India ceased to acknowledge The Emperor of India as head of State; the Emperor and Governor-General were replaced by a President who would serve as head of State.

The current President of India is The Honourable Pranab Mukherjee.
