The 'family' was a rag-tag group of 'flower children' that lived as a family with their guru ex-con named Charles Manson. They lived on the fringes of society and on the fringes of Death Valley. Among other things they killed at least 9 people (most estimate the total is much larger) before they were finally stopped in 1969.
Manson, Patricia Krenwinkle, Susan Atkins, Leslie Van Houten, Charles 'Tex' Watson, Bobby Beausoleil were all convicted of murders (not at the same time) and given death. All death sentences were commuted to life when the Supreme Court struck down the death penalty due to cruel and unusual punishment for prisoners.
