There are several that could fit that description. Ted Bundy taught America that you can't trust a handsome face and charming demeanor. John Wayne Gacy was everyone's ideal neighbor, a businessman and involved in local politics when he wasn't entertaining children with his Pogo the Clown personna. Jeffrey Dahmer shocked the world with his freezer full of heads and other body parts, leftovers from victims he had for dinner. Gary Ridgeway, quiet and polite, considered a good Christian by those who knew him, killed over 60 young women in the Seattle, WA, area. He was finally caught by advances in DNA technology after two decades of killing. And finally, Charles Manson*, a living, breathing nightmare who has brought untold misery to those unlucky enough to enter his orbit.

*Charles Manson is considered a serial killer but also was a cult leader.

The most recognized name in serial murder would have to be Jack The Ripper, the 19th century killer that roamed London's impoverished east end known as Whitechapel.

Notable mentions: Ted Bundy, Gary Leon Ridgeway, Jeffrey Dahmer, John Wayne Gacy and Aileen Wurnous.

This of course is just a matter of opinion. But some of the most widely known are as follows: Theodore Bundy confessed to over 35 murders, suspected of many more. Jeffrey Dahmer aka The Cannibal of Milwaukee confessed to 17 murders. John Wayne Gacy aka The Killer Clown confessed to 33 murders. Gary Leon Ridgeway aka The Green River Killer confessed to over 55 murders, even he was unsure of the total. But despite the notoriety of the above killers, by far the most universally well known serial killer of all time has to be London's Jack The Ripper. Although his victim count was much lower than more modern killers he is famous for ushering in the age of serial murder. Serial murder is as old as mankind yet Saucy Jack made headlines around the world, making a name for himself in the history of modern serial murder.

second answer:

Ted Bundy confessed to 30 murders but he did not back up his confection by leading the authorities to the locations of the corpses and he did not pinpoint the locations in Utah, Colorado and Washington where some corpses were found. There were only 5 kills and a kidnap proven to be his. The problem adding a number of deaths to a serial killer who did not back up his confession could mean another killer has to be apprehended. Why did Bundy could not tell were his other victims were disposed of or the place where authorities found some corpses even if that would add time for his life? He could not because he did not know the information.

On the other hand, we have Henry Lee Lucas. By the time he was apprehended, it took 2 years and a half to finish his confection and 5 more years to lead the authorities to the grave sites of over the United states. When the 175Th corpse found unearthed, the authorities were sure they have an experience killer and it took another 8 years to place the found corpses found which matched those he claimed.

That is a confession properly backed up and a single person could prove it was a dubious confection. So now you a have a well experienced killer and not a novice one.

Jack the ripper was the first serial killer who made the media headlines and thus the first serial killer with workdwide coverage. Another serial killer did something uncomon. Dennis Rader know as the BTK killer, killed for 30 years. After years he came back to kill again until he was aprehended.

Some serial killers have something unique that has persons looking for the information.

Probably Jack Bauer. It is spelled serial by the way.

There are many infamous serial killers. One very well-known serial killer who named himself Jack the Ripper. Jack the Ripper was a murder in 1888. He murdered five women, all where prostitutes and most were stabbed repeatedly below the waist. Jack the Ripper was very well-known for sending letters signed with his self christened name. Another interesting fact that still baffles the world is the real identity of Jack the Ripper.

Note: The word infamous is a better word to describe people famous for wrong doings, like serial killers.

I will define famous as name recognition, or most recognized name. Jack The Ripper, Ted Bundy, John Wayne Gacy, Richard Rameriz, Kenneth Bianci and Angelo Bono, David Berkowitz (Son Of Sam), Gary Leon Ridgeway, Charles Manson, Jeffrey Dahmer, Arthur Shawcross, Aileen Wuornos and Denis Rader. This is of course not a complete list, just the individuals that got more than their share of publicity.

Of course everybody has a different opinion as to what 'famous' means but it is usually accepted the London's Jack The Ripper is the best known. Over 120 years later and his crimes are more popular (as a whodunit) than ever.

A close running second would have to be Ted Bundy.
