Abigail Williams (Ann Putnam in the real trials) names people as being involved in witchcraft. You can say there are many reasons why she does this. She had an affair with John Proctor, and she names his wife Elizabeth as a witch to separate them and marry John, which fails. She was also caught participating in a magic ceremony, which are strictly forbidden. She doesn't want to get caught, and therefore lies saying she was possessed and names people who did it. Eventually the whole town gets swept up in the hysteria, with all 11 girls who were also caught in the ceremony backing up Abigail's claims.
