On 3 October 1984 Macartney-Snape and Greg Mortimer were the first Australians to reach the summit of Mount Everest. They reached the summit, climbing without supplementary oxygen, via a new route on the North Face (North Face to Norton Couloir).

At 2,228 metres (7,310 ft), Mt. Kosciuzko is the tallest mountain on the continent of Australia, slightly taller than its neighbor Mt. Townsend. It is an extremely easy climb, possible for anyone in good physical condition. There are no technical sections requiring ropes or other assists.

Mt. Kosciuzko was named for the Polish patriot General Tadeusz Kos'ciuszko, by the explorer Count Paul Edmund Strzelecki in 1840.

Mount Kosciuszko was never climbed by aboriginals because they said that the tops of the tops are where the spirits of the elders dance and they do not want to disturb there elders spirits.
