A funeral for someone in the military
For the thirteen original states.
Yes.
Most flags used in military funeral were flown over the Capitol in Washington DC for just a moment before being packaged for military funerals.
Proper flag protocol dictates that whenever the flag is properly folded (not just military funerals) it is folded so that the Union (blue with white stars) is on the outside and showing.
if the U.S. flag is used to cover a casket at a funeral can the flag be lowered into the grave?
Do nothing, the color guard knows the proper protocol.
The Flag is provided by the US Military during a military funeral. All US Servicemen/women who were honorably discharged or Generally Discharged under Honorable Conditions from service are entitled to have Military honors at their burial. This service is provided by the US Military, and a detail can be provided by the nearest military installation if available. When one cannot be provided, an honor guard can be arranged with the Local chapter of the VFW (Veterans of Foreign Wars) chapter. MORE SPECIFICALLY -- The funeral home typically obtains the flag from the Department of Veterans Affairs, but through the local U.S. Post Office. A flag request form must be presented. The family may also submit this form directly and request delivery.
This policy has changed effective February 11, 2013. A same-sex widow or widower is now eligible to receive presentation of the flag of the United States.
There is a lot of speculation as to what was whispered to Mike Frankâ??s daughter during the funeral. Since it was a military funeral, and Gibbs is military, it could be assumed that he was whispering the thank you that is said during the folding of the flag.
