Scouts are elected by their troop to join the OA if they have had fifteen nights of camping within the past two years and are First Class rank or above.Once elected to join the OA, the candidate goes through a camping weekend called the Ordeal, and in doing so becomes a member of the OA.There are three 'honors' in the OA:Ordeal Member - A scout who has completed their Ordeal. They receive a white sash with a red arrow.Brotherhood Member - A scout who, having been an Ordeal Member for at least ten months, has completed their Brotherhood Ordeal. They receive the same sash as before only with a red bar at each end of the arrow.Vigil Member - A scout who, having been Brotherhood for at least two years and provided outstanding service to the Scouting movement, has been nominated by the Lodge Vigil Committee, and then completes his Vigil Ordeal. He receives the Brotherhood sash with a special triangle design in the middle of the arrow. In the OA, the term brotherhood can also refer to the OA as a whole.
