The foundations of modern Singapore have been attributed to Lee Kuan Yew. He has been leading the country for over 30 years (prime minister between 1959 and 1988, but still acting as a "Minister Mentor" after that).
He has successfully led Singapore through difficult times in the 60s (this was when Singapore had just became independent and was still a third world country) to help it become one of the richest countries (per capita).
