In Greek myth, victory was personified by Nike, daughter of Styx, identified with Athena.
The Greek goddess of victory is Nike.
Sometimes spelt Irene or Eirene
Nike was the Greek goddess of victory, and the divine charioteer in ancient and classical Greek art. She continued to be shown with wings long after other gods were rendered, artistically, as wingless. Wings came to be associated with Nike's role as goddess of speed, strength, and victory. So perhaps one of her two most famous artistic representations was the statue ka the Winged Victory of Samothrace. Perhaps the other has been Olympic medals of the 20th and 21st centuries. For Summer Olympics medal winners, since 1928, have found her representation holding a palm and a winner's crown.
According to Karen Cushman the exact origin is uncertain. Cushman states, "It apparently refers to the body of Christ. Or, if it's a corruption of the Latin word for good, it might mean "good body". I did not document my source for "corpus bones."Cushman's explanation however, might be misleading. It appears that the expression may be the result of confusing the separate expressions: corpus Domini and Goddes bones. Goddes refers to God while the expression Goddes bones can be found in Chaucer's Canterbury Tales, "By Goddes bones, whan I bete my knaves". Corpus on the other hand originally comes from the Latin meaning body although it is used presently in a rather gruesome sense.
