Australia is made up of six states and two territories. Each State is led by a Premier (not a President) who generally is the head of the ruling party.

In 2013, the premier of New South Wales was Barry O'Farrell. O'Farrell resigned in 2014, to be replaced by M I've Baird.

There is a Governor of NSW, who represents the Queen. Professor Marie Bashir AC Professor Bashir, the first woman to be appointed Governor of NSW, took up her office on 1 March 2001.

In a state election held on 26 March 2011, Barry O'Farrell, of the Liberal Party of Australia, was elected Premier of NSW in a landslide victory. O'Farrell is the member for Ku-ring-gai. He is the first Liberal Premier of NSW since John Fahey was narrowly defeated in a state election in April 1995.
