A lot depends on how you define 'computer.' For very early mechanical devices check out Abacuses which are truly ancient and still in use in some parts of the world; Pascal -- late 17th Cent; Leibniz -- early 18th Cent and Babbage in the early 19th Cent.
The modern computer is a result of the work of Turning in the 1930's thru the 1960's working with Von Neumann's teams at the Institute of Advanced Study at Princeton and the Los Alamos Lab in NM and Aberdeen Proving Grounds in MD. This was all part of the WWII weapons development effort.
