Askia Mohammed I established the Askia Dynasty in the Songhai Empire in the late 15th century. He was a devout Muslim and greatly expanded the empire's territory through conquest and diplomacy.
Songhai Empire was at is peak from 1500 AD to 1582. In 1500, Songhai covered 1.4 million square kilometers. It had conquered most of the Mali Empire and had sent expeditions into modern Senegal and Nigeria. In 1582, Askia Daoud died and the empire erupted in civil war for succession. By the time the war was over, Songhai was being invaded by Morocco which crushed it in 1591.
