Roman Catholic AnswerAfter Vatican Council II, Pope Paul VI reduced the number of minor orders to two: lector and acolyte. He suppressed the orders of porter and subdeacon. Lector and acolyte are the ordinations normally given to second and third year seminarians in the Major Seminary. After acolyte, the next ordination is major - deacon. Lector is sometimes used, incorrectly of the readers at Church who are not ordained by are filling in at the local parish where there is not an ordained lector. Just as Extraordinary ministers are filling in for acolytes who are the normal extraordinary ministers of the Eucharist.
