Perhaps the most famous naval hero for the Union was Admiral David Glasgow Farragut who is best remembered for saying "Darn the torpedoes! Full speed ahead, Drayton!" This was said after one of his ships was sunk by a mine at the battle of Mobile Bay, Alabama, August 5, 1864. But, of course, he didn't actually say "darn."
It would be fair to say that each side in the US Civil War had great navy heroes. For the Confederacy, the captain of the CSS Alabama, Raphael Semmes should be considered. He captured too many Union ships to count. As for the Union's greatest naval hero, that would be Admiral Farragut. He led the capture of New Orleans early in the war.
