The dark ages refers to the time from the fall of the Roman Empire to Charlemagne being named the Holy Roman Emperor. It was called the dark ages because not much history was recorded in that time.

The event which historians consider as marking the end of the western part of the Roman Empire and the beginning of the Middle Ages (not dark ages) is the deposition of Romulus Augustus, the last emperor of the western part of the empire in 476.

The Renaissance was not labeled the "dark ages". Renaissance means "rebrith" and it came AFTER the "dark ages or the middle ages."

The Greek Dark Ages began in about the year 1200 BC. There is no exact year for their beginning. Clearly, the Greek Dark Ages and the Dark Ages were not the same thing, and they were not really related, as the Dark Ages began in the middle of the 5th century AD.
It wasn't any colder than any other time. The "dark ages" refers to the lack of learning, science, and the development of new inventions. It was a time of chaos and death.
