The name of the nymph who answered back in Greek mythology is Echo. She was a mountain nymph or Oread. When Echo would distract Hera, so that Zeus could consort with other nymphs, Hera punished her by taking away her voice. After that she was only able to echo others.

Echo was a forest nymph protecting Zeus from his jealous wife, Hera. Hera cursed the nymph's voice so that she could only repeat what was spoken to her. She distracted Hera while Zeus went back to Olympus after sneaking out.
