There can be no such thing as a patron for the protection and preservation of self-righteousness, for self-righteousness is a very serious fault and indicates defects in the virtues of religion, of humility, and of justice. The Catholic Church does not encourage her members to commit such faults and sins, but with the help of God to overcome them. For the Christian who is self-righteous flatters himself that whatever goodness and righteousness he may possess he owes to his own efforts and virtues, instead of to God alone, which is a deception and a sin. And if this Christian, furthermore, in his self-righteousness regard his neighbor with disdain and with scorn because his neighbor falls into some sin, that, also is a sin on his part. Which may be seen from this parable of the Master: "'Two people went up to the temple area to pray; one was a Pharisee and the other was a tax collector. The Pharisee took up his position and spoke this prayer to himself, "O God, I thank you that I am not like the rest of humanity -- greedy, dishonest, adulterous -- or even like this tax collector. I fast twice a week, and I pay tithes on my whole income."'" : "'But the tax collector stood off at a distance and would not even raise his eyes to heaven but beat his breast and prayed, "O God, be merciful to me a sinner." I tell you, the latter went home justified, not the former; for everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, and the one who humbles himself will be exalted.'" (Luke 18:10-14)
