Moses Austin is famous because he was the founder of the lead industry in the United States. He was also the father of one of the leading settlers of Texas.
In 1821, Moses Austin, who was living in Louisiana at the time, received permission to bring approximately 300 colonists to settle in Texas. On his way to Missouri for the settlers, he was brutally attacked by highwaymen, who robbed and severely beat him. He eventually made it to Missouri, but died before he could bring the settlers to Texas.
Moses Austin was known as the "Father of Texas" for his role in establishing the first Anglo-American settlement in the region and his efforts to bring American colonists to Texas.
