Hebrews 4:12 For the word of God is living and active. Sharper than any two edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart.
There are many people in this world that have hardened hearts and refuse to hear the Word of God. They refuse to listen and fight it at every turn. However I can tell you from experience that no matter how hardened someones heart is, the word of God can penetrate into their heart and soul and change them. It can judge your thoughts and actions and cause you to see that your ways are wrong. The first step in changing is seeing where your mistakes are. The Word of God can do that. Then the word can get into your heart and show you the love that God has for you. That sword pierced my heart and I am now a believer in Jesus Christ because of it.
Hebrews 4:12-13 talk about the power of God.
A theme throughout Hebrews is Jesus as the pre-existing Son of God and as the High Priest in heaven. Several scholars have suggested that what was originally read from Hebrews as a scriptural proof for the resurrection and exaltation of Jesus becomes an argument for his pre-existence. Some even point out that Hebrews could have been written about a Son and High Priest in heaven, who had never lived and died on earth. So Hebrews 4:14 enjoins us to remember that Jesus is the High Priest in heaven.
The writer of Hebrews is writing to Hebrew Christians. Verses 18 through 21 tells the story of Israel and their experience at Mt. Sinai when God gave the law to the nation through Moses. There was much fear and trembling at that time because of the mighty God. Verses 22 through 24 is a different story about these present day Hebrews who have come to God for salvation. The Mt Zion mentioned here is not the earthly Mt. in Jerusalem, but the one in God's abode in heaven. They have come to God through Jesus Christ and to an innumerable company of angels, to the general assembly and church of Jesus Christ the firstborn (the head of the church, Christianity) and they are registered or written in the book of life. Jesus' blood is better that that of Abel's offering which was only a temporary covering for sin whereas Jesus' blood covers sin for all time for anyone who accepts Him as Savior. This passage is an argument that Jesus and Christianity is far Superior to the Law of the Old Testament.
(Heb.4:12) "For the Word of God is full of Living Power. It is sharper than the sharpest knife, cutting deep into our innermost thoughts and desires. It exposes us for what we really are." (NLT New Living Translation)
Man is flesh and blood. The "physical" is what we know, naturally, and are led and guided by it. Material things. Yet, The Bible reveals that there is a "spirit" within each of us - [Ps.31:5; Zech.12:1; Eph.4:23; James 4:5]. So, it's the understanding of the "spiritual" aspect of life that must be revealed to us. Spirit, that our five physical senses cannot see or otherwise perceive. This is what the LIVING"Word of God" does... and IS. It's God's "Divine Revelation" to His special creation, MAN, created in His image.
Of Hebrews 4:12, Matthew Henry says:
"...The Holy Scriptures are the Word of God. When God sets it home by His Spirit, it convinces powerfully, converts powerfully, and comforts powerfully. It makes a soul that has long been proud, to be humble; and a perverse spirit, to be meek and obedient. Sinful habits, that are become as it were natural to the soul, and rooted deeply in it, are separated and cut off be this Sword. It will discover to men their thoughts and purposes, the vileness of many, the bad principles they are moved by, the sinful ends they act to. The Word will show the sinner all that is in his heart. Let us hold fast the doctrines of Christian Faith in our heads, its enlivening principles in our hearts, the open profession of it in our lips, and be subject to it in our lives..." (Matthew Henry's Concise Commentary: Hebrews 4:12).
Hebrews 12 is an exhortation and an encouragement to the Hebrew Christians to continue strong in their faith.
It is in Hebrews 27 verse 9. The phrase "the harrowing of hell" does not appear in the King James, New King James, Standard, or NIV translations of the Bible. The word "harrow" appears in 2 Samuel 12:31; 1 Chronicles 20:3; Job 39:10 and Isaiah 28:24 (in the Standard version), where it refers to a sharp cutting implement or a plow. It is not associated with hell in those passages. It most certainly is not in Hebrews 27:9...Hebrews has only thirteen chapters.
