The Legislature of Alberta consists of Her Majesty the Queen of Canada (represented by the Lieutenant Governor), and the Legislative Assembly of Alberta. The Lieutenant Governor is appointed by the Governor General of Canada on the advice of the prime minister, and serves at the pleasure of the Governor General (usually around 5 years). Currently, the Queen's provincial representative is His Honour Col. (Ret'd) the Honourable Donald Ethell O.C., O.M.M., A.O.E., M.S.C., C.D., the Lieutenant Governor of Alberta.
