According to Wikipedia:
"An official suicide count was kept, sorted according to which of the bridge's 128 lamp posts the jumper was nearest when he or she jumped. By 2005, this count exceeded 1,200 and new suicides were averaging one every two weeks."

Oh, yeah. Easily. The Golden Gate Bridge is as high off the water as a skyscraper is tall.
I was wondering the same thing. We were on the bridge that day and my 12 year old stepson was a witness to the jump. Let me know if you find out anything.
No one is known to have committed suicide on the bridge, but the San Francisco Chronicle reports that more than 1,250 have killed themselves by jumping off of it. The exact number is not known, because there are some bodies found that might have jumped off the bridge, but it isn't known for sure. And there are certainly people who jumped off and no one observed it and the body was never recovered.

It depends on the bridge. As of the golden gate bridge i know its illegal but people still do it. Because they had somany people jumped off it and their shoot didnt open or budgy cord failed and they died their familys were fined and there for its illegal to jump off the golden gate bridge. Some states or jurisdictions have laws prohibiting diving off any bridges or overpasses. In some areas it may just depends upon whether or not the bridge is posted with a sign prohibiting the act and it varies for each bridge within that jurisdiction. There are many bridges in the United States that allow one to dive from them or bungee jump. Some bridges have signs saying jumping prohibited and you will be fined from 200-1000$
The Golden Gate Bridge is painted red, but called Golden because of the sun. Its steel cables are long enough to circle the Earth three times! If the US Navy had its way, the bridge might have been painted in black and yellow strips, for ships to see it clearly. Over 1,200 suicides have occurred from jumping off the bridge. The Golden Gate Bridge is the most photographed bridge in the entire world.
Since its opening in 1978, the West Gate Bridge in Melbourne, Australia, has seen a number of suicides via jumping. However, specific figures on the exact number of people who have jumped are not readily available. The authorities have taken measures to prevent suicides at the bridge, such as installing barriers and crisis phones.
