It is said that English soldiers under the Sheriff of Lanark (who was English) murdered the wife of William Wallace in an attempt to flush Wallace out of hiding. Wallace at that time was an outlaw, wanted by the English for stealing beer from a Perth tavern. However, this is all probably fanciful as it was written much later by chronicler John of Fordun. In all probability, the Sheriff of Lanark was killed at the start of the revolt against English occupation of Scotland. Whether Wallace killed the Sheriff or not is open to question. Wallce did not start the revolt, he merely responded to one already begun. Anyhow, the Sheriff of Lanark was killed simply because he was an English figure of authority, probably.
