It is said that English soldiers under the Sheriff of Lanark (who was English) murdered the wife of William Wallace in an attempt to flush Wallace out of hiding. Wallace at that time was an outlaw, wanted by the English for stealing beer from a Perth tavern. However, this is all probably fanciful as it was written much later by chronicler John of Fordun. In all probability, the Sheriff of Lanark was killed at the start of the revolt against English occupation of Scotland. Whether Wallace killed the Sheriff or not is open to question. Wallce did not start the revolt, he merely responded to one already begun. Anyhow, the Sheriff of Lanark was killed simply because he was an English figure of authority, probably.
because he was a outlaw and he murdered the sheriff of lanark
He murdered The Sheriff Of Lanark and burned down monasteries He was executed for treason.
The tactics employed by Wallace were similar to what you could call 'Terrorist Tactics' today. The main reason was that Wallace, being only a minor knight, was unable to call many men to his banner, so guerrilla tactics were employed to carry out successful opposition.

I wouldn't describe him as an 'activist.' He was more a freedom fighter. The English Sheriff of Lanark supposedly killed Wallace's wife or ordered her killing in an attempt to flush Wallace out from hiding. Wallace was already an outlaw, he was wanted for stealing a barrel of beer from an inn. Wallace killed the Sheriff and became an even more wanted outlaw. This eventually turned into a full Scottish uprising against the occupying English forces.
The population of Lanark is 8,253.
