On April 22, 1500, Pedro Álvares Cabral [ca. 1468 - ca. 1520] set foot on Brazilian land at Porto Seguro in northeastern Brazil. He's credited as Brazil's first European discoverer. On April 21, 1500 he first sighted Brazil. On that date, he viewed and named Monte Pascoal, 39 miles [62 kilometers] north of Monte Porto Seguro. On May 3rd he left Porto Seguro to resume his voyage to India.
