Miguel Hidalgo (1753-1811) started the revolt that eventually became the Mexican War of Independence (1810-1821) against Spain. He however, was captured and executed within the first year of the conflict. Then, other "insurgents" took this position, such as Jose Maria Morelos (1765-1815), Guadalupe Victoria (1786-1843) and Vicente Guerrero (1782-1831) who eventually ended the conflict.

Mexico became defacto independent on September 27, 1821 when the Three Guarantees Army entered Mexico City, uncontested.
