Absentia funeral prayer is lawful in Islam. It is prayed at every funeral. Mojority of the Muslim scholars do not consider it lawful. The holy Prophet (SAW) offered absentia funeral prayer only once in his life time, that was of the King of Habsha Najjashi (RAU) because he had accepted Islam but he kept it a secret therefore no one had offered his funeral prayer. Many Companions of the Prophet (SAW) died/martyred during his lifetime but he never offered their funeral prayer in absentia. (Wullah o a'alamo bis sawab.
