Thomas Hooker lead a group of Puritans out of the Massachusets Bay Colony to Connecticut in order to gain religious freedom and trading opportunities. There were 100 men and women and 130 cattle.

Reasons varied: 1. Group left Dorchester for CT. because Pastor Richard Mather arrived with a group of his own followers. 2. Some of new settlers and previous settlers did not agree totally on issues. (see Pope family history)
The first group of settlers in the Roanoke colony arrived in 1585 and were mainly soldiers and laborers. The second group arrived in 1587 and included more women and children, as they intended to establish a more permanent settlement. Additionally, the first group had more military presence and support, while the second group had more family units.
The first explorer to arrive in Connecticut was Dutch explorer Adriaen Block. Soon after his exploration of Connecticut, John Winthrop, a member of the Massachusetts colony, received permission in 1636 to make a colony at Old Saybrook, which is at the mouth of the Connecticut River. During this time, a large group of settlers, Puritans, led by Thomas Hooker and coming out of Massachusetts, settled in the region, soon incorporation Old Saybrook into it. He soon broke from Massachusetts to create a Puritan settlement at Hartford in 1636.
